Potato guide

Fewer, smaller tubers and rising fertilizer bills.

Potato stage by stage

Potato is a short, heavy-feeding crop. Many growers now use more fertilizer every season but get fewer tubers, smaller sizes and weaker skins. The cause is often below the ground: tired soil and weak roots at the moment tubers are forming.

Main growing areas: Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Gujarat.

  1. Planting and emergence

About the first 3 to 4 weeks

Seed tubers sprout and roots start. Seed quality, soil moisture and soil temperature decide how evenly plants come up.

  2. Vegetative growth

    About 3 to 6 weeks

Leaves and stems build the plant's food factory. Strong roots now support more tubers later.

  3. Tuber initiation

    About 6 to 8 weeks

The plant decides how many tubers it will carry. Stress at this stage (water, heat, nutrient shortage) means fewer tubers.

  4. Bulking and maturity

    About 8 weeks to harvest

Tubers grow in size and weight, then the skin sets. Steady water and potash matter most.

Common potato problems

Problems farmers bring to us

  • Fewer tubers per plant
  • Small or uneven tubers
  • Weak skin, poor keeping quality
  • Yields falling on the same land
  • Fertilizer use going up every season

What to check first

  • Use certified, healthy seed tubers of the right size.
  • Test the soil before planting; potato land often has high salts or low organic carbon.
  • Avoid water stress at tuber initiation.
  • Dig a few plants at 7 to 8 weeks and count the tubers set.

Potato questions

Why are my potatoes small?

Small tubers usually come from stress during bulking: dry spells, heat, poor roots or a nutrient shortage. Too many tubers on a weak plant also stay small.

Why are there fewer tubers per plant?

The number of tubers is decided at tuber initiation, around 6 to 8 weeks. Stress at that time, weak roots or poor seed reduce it.
