Auxin: the master regulator of root and shoot growth
What auxin does in roots, shoots, branching and fruit, why too much is as bad as too little, and what growers can do to protect it.
Read the previous partSeaweed extracts are complex mixtures of sugars, plant-growth substances, minerals and protective compounds. Studies report that, applied at the right stage and dose, they can support root growth, nutrient uptake and stress tolerance. The effect depends on the seaweed species, how it is extracted, the crop and the conditions, so they should be chosen for a purpose and tested.
Part 3 of 6 in the Plant Science Series by Gafar Laiya: plant physiology and biostimulant science, in plain language. Published 30 October 2026.
Seaweed is not one material. Brown seaweeds such as Ascophyllum and Sargassum, and red seaweeds such as Kappaphycus, differ in what they contain, and the extraction method changes what ends up in the bottle. In general, extracts contain:
| Component | What it is | Why it matters to a plant |
|---|---|---|
| Polysaccharides | Seaweed sugars such as alginate, laminarin, fucoidan and carrageenan | Reported to act as signals that can trigger defence and stress responses, and help bind water |
| Plant-growth substances | Trace amounts of natural cytokinin-like, auxin-like and other compounds | May influence root growth, cell division and flowering |
| Osmolytes | Betaines and similar protective molecules | Help cells hold water under salt and drought stress |
| Minerals and trace elements | Potassium, magnesium, calcium and micronutrients in small amounts | A small supporting supply, not a replacement for fertilizer |
| Phenolic and other compounds | Natural antioxidants | May help the plant handle stress damage |
Not every trial shows a benefit. Results vary with the seaweed, the dose, the crop, the soil and the weather. That is why testing on your own farm matters.
| Stage or problem | Why seaweed extract is considered | How it is usually applied |
|---|---|---|
| Early root growth and transplanting | To support rooting and recovery from shock | Soil drench, drip or root dip as the label says |
| Vegetative growth | To support growth and nutrient uptake | Foliar spray or drip |
| Flowering and fruit set | To support flowering and set under stress | Foliar spray at the right stage |
| Before and during stress such as heat, salt or dry spells | To help the plant prepare for and handle the stress | Foliar spray or drip before the stress where it can be predicted |
This is the same approach we describe in our root-growth guide. A fair test is worth more than any claim on a label.
Next in this series: humic acid and root-zone development.

Not exactly. Seaweed extracts are used mainly for their growth-supporting compounds, while their nutrient content is small. They are a biostimulant, not a main fertilizer.
No species is best for every crop. Ascophyllum, Sargassum and Kappaphycus are all used. Choose by crop, stage and a trial on your own farm.
Often yes, but check compatibility on the label and do a small jar test first.
Early root and growth differences can sometimes be seen within two to three weeks in a well-run trial. Yield results need a full season.
These are starting points for readers who want to look at the research. Findings differ between crops, products and conditions.
