Cobalt deficiency signs in legumes and livestock fodder

How cobalt shortage shows in pulses and fodder legumes, how it affects animals that eat the fodder, and how to tell it from other nodulation problems.

Cobalt shortage shows in legumes as nitrogen-starved plants with poor nodules, because the nodule bacteria cannot make vitamin B12. It also matters for livestock, which need cobalt from their fodder. Because molybdenum, sulphur and poor inoculation cause similar signs, check those first.

Crop by crop

CropWhat you see
Pulses: gram, tur, moong, uradPale plants with poor nodules on cobalt-poor soils.
Groundnut and soybeanPale leaves and weak nodulation.
Fodder legumes such as berseem and lucerneWeak nodulation and low cobalt in fodder for animals.

Check these before cobalt

  • Was the seed inoculated with the right Rhizobium culture?
  • Is the soil acid, suggesting molybdenum shortage?
  • Are young leaves pale, suggesting sulphur shortage?
  • Is the field waterlogged?

Signs in animals

  • Poor appetite and weight loss on cobalt-poor pasture.
  • Ask a veterinarian; mineral supplements for animals are the usual fix.

Confirm and correct

  • Confirm with a soil or leaf test before you spend.
  • Read the full cobalt guide for causes and correction.
  • Use the symptom guide to compare with other nutrients.

How Gujarat Bio Organics can help

Since 2006, lakhs of farmers from Kashmir to Kanyakumari have used Immunity products on almost every crop: from the mango farms around Somnath to the apple orchards of Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir, the tea estates of Assam and Darjeeling, and the banana, coconut and cardamom farms of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. Each Special is one formula made for one crop and its common problems. Tell us your crop, soil test and what you see, and our team will tell you what to check, whether a micronutrient correction is needed, and which Special fits your programme.
