Why more urea or water-soluble fertilizer does not fix yellow leaves

Yellow leaves are often treated with more urea or NPK. Why that fails when sulphur, magnesium, iron or zinc is the real cause, and what to do instead.

Urea fixes yellowing only when nitrogen is short, and nitrogen shortage starts on the old leaves. When young leaves are yellow, or old leaves are yellow between green veins, the cause is usually sulphur, iron, zinc, manganese or magnesium, and more urea or NPK water-soluble fertilizer will not help. It can even make it worse by speeding growth the crop cannot support.

Why more urea can make it worse

  • Extra nitrogen speeds growth, so the crop needs even more of the nutrient that is short.
  • Soft, lush growth attracts sucking pests.
  • Ammonium from urea competes with calcium and magnesium.
  • Wasted nitrogen washes out and pollutes water.

Water-soluble NPK is not a cure-all

  • Most NPK water-soluble grades supply little or no micronutrient.
  • They help when NPK is short, not when zinc, boron or iron is.
  • Check the label: what nutrients and how much.

What to do instead

  • Read the leaves: old or young, pattern and colour.
  • Check drainage and roots.
  • Test the soil for sulphur and micronutrients.
  • Correct the nutrient that is short and the cause behind it.

How Gujarat Bio Organics can help

Since 2006, lakhs of farmers from Kashmir to Kanyakumari have used Immunity products on almost every crop: from the mango farms around Somnath to the apple orchards of Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir, the tea estates of Assam and Darjeeling, and the banana, coconut and cardamom farms of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. Each Special is one formula made for one crop and its common problems. Tell us your crop, soil test and what you see, and our team will tell you what to check, whether a micronutrient correction is needed, and which Special fits your programme.

Questions

Why do my leaves stay yellow after urea?

Because the cause is not nitrogen. Young-leaf yellowing usually means sulphur, iron, zinc or manganese; old-leaf yellowing between green veins usually means magnesium.

Does NPK 19:19:19 contain micronutrients?

Standard NPK water-soluble grades are made for nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Check the label for any micronutrients added.
