Micronutrient deficiency symptoms: how to read the leaves
A field guide to reading nutrient deficiency symptoms: old leaves or new, pattern and colour, which nutrient each points to, and the look-alikes to rule out.
Read the full guideHow unmanaged micronutrient shortage cuts germination, flowering, fruit set, size, brix and price, and raises fertilizer and spray costs.
A micronutrient shortage limits the whole crop, however much NPK is applied. It shows as weak germination and growth, poor flowering and fruit set, fruit drop, small and low-quality produce with low brix and poor shelf life, and lower market prices. It also wastes fertilizer and leaves the crop weaker against pests, diseases, heat, cold, drought and salt.

A crop grows only as well as its scarcest nutrient allows. Think of a bucket made of wooden staves of different heights: water fills only up to the shortest stave. If zinc or boron is the short stave, more urea or DAP raises the other staves but not the water level. This is why yields can stay flat while fertilizer bills rise.
Yield is often lost before any symptom appears. A crop slightly short of a micronutrient looks normal but grows and yields less. Soil surveys count these latent shortages too. By the time leaves show it, a part of the yield is already gone, so testing before the season is worth more than spraying after symptoms appear.
| Stage | What a shortage does | Nutrients most involved |
|---|---|---|
| Germination and seedling | Weak germination, poor vigour, gaps in the stand | Zinc, phosphorus, calcium, boron |
| Vegetative growth | Stunted plants, small leaves, fewer tillers and branches | Zinc, iron, manganese, magnesium, sulphur |
| Flowering | Late, weak or no flowering; flower drop | Boron, zinc, molybdenum, copper |
| Fruit and pod set | Poor set, few fruits, empty pods and grains | Boron, calcium, copper, zinc |
| Fruit growth | Fruit drop, small fruit, cracking | Boron, calcium, magnesium, potassium |
| Ripening and harvest | Poor colour, low brix, poor shelf life | Magnesium, potassium, calcium, boron |
Grain grown on zinc and iron-poor soil carries less zinc and iron for the people who eat it, and fodder poor in cobalt, copper or selenium affects animal health. Healthy soil grows healthier food.
Doses depend on the crop, soil and product, so this page gives methods, not amounts. Take the dose from your soil test report, the product label or your local agriculture officer or KVK. Results differ from farm to farm with soil, weather, crop and management. Farmer experiences on this site are their own reports, not a promise of results.

Read the full guideSince 2006, lakhs of farmers from Kashmir to Kanyakumari have used Immunity products on almost every crop: from the mango farms around Somnath to the apple orchards of Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir, the tea estates of Assam and Darjeeling, and the banana, coconut and cardamom farms of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. Each Special is one formula made for one crop and its common problems. Tell us your crop, soil test and what you see, and our team will tell you what to check, whether a micronutrient correction is needed, and which Special fits your programme.

Yes. This hidden hunger cuts yield before any leaf symptom appears. Soil testing before the season finds it.
One common reason is that a micronutrient or sulphur is the limiting factor. Adding more NPK does not lift that limit.
Balanced nutrition makes crops harder to attack and quicker to recover, but it does not replace scouting and pest control.
