Copper deficiency symptoms crop by crop

How copper deficiency looks in wheat, citrus, onion, vegetables and fruit trees, what it is confused with, and why you should test before applying copper.

Copper deficiency shows at the shoot tips: wilting and dieback with moist soil, pale twisted young leaves, white leaf tips in cereals and empty grain heads. It is less common than zinc or boron, so test before treating, because too much copper harms roots and soil life.

Crop by crop

CropWhat you see
Wheat and cerealsWhite, twisted leaf tips, empty or partly filled ears, more lodging.
CitrusDieback of young shoots, gum pockets and multiple weak shoots (exanthema).
OnionThin, pale bulb scales and poor colour.
VegetablesWilting of young growth and pale, twisted leaves.
Fruit treesDieback of new shoots and small leaves.

Look-alikes

  • Water stress also wilts tips; copper-short crops wilt even when the soil is moist.
  • Frost and heat damage can whiten leaf tips.
  • Boron shortage also kills growing points but makes leaves thick and brittle.

Before you apply copper

  • Check the spray history for copper fungicides.
  • Test the soil and a leaf sample.
  • Treat only the fields that test short.

Confirm and correct

  • Confirm with a soil or leaf test before you spend.
  • Read the full copper guide for causes and correction.
  • Use the symptom guide to compare with other nutrients.

Doses depend on the crop, soil and product, so this page gives methods, not amounts. Take the dose from your soil test report, the product label or your local agriculture officer or KVK.
